QLine IT is pleased to be working with West Yorkshire Police to bring free cyber security training to businesses across Leeds and the wider region. We recently met with PC Emma Davies, the force’s Cyber Protect Officer, to arrange sessions that we will be making available to our clients and our wider business network.
Cyber security threats are on the rise, and human error remains the leading cause of breaches. Nationally, 95% of cyberattacks are caused by human error, and 43% of UK businesses experienced a cyberattack in the last twelve months. Training staff to recognise and respond to threats is one of the most effective, and most overlooked, ways to reduce that risk.
About the Cyber Protect team
PC Emma Davies works within West Yorkshire Police’s Crime Team as the Cyber Protect Officer. Part of her role is delivering free training to local businesses on the potential impact of a cyberattack and how to guard against one. As a public organisation, West Yorkshire Police is not able to charge for this training. All that is required is a suitable room and a screen for in person sessions, or nothing at all for sessions delivered online.
What is on offer
West Yorkshire Police has put together a portfolio of sessions covering different needs and time frames.
Cyber Protect, the Basics runs for two hours and is aimed at staff of all technical levels. It is a non technical, engaging session on how to stay safe online, and is the session we would recommend for most businesses since every employee is a potential weak point. It can be delivered in person, for up to fifteen attendees, or online with no limit on numbers.
Cyber Protect for Business runs for an hour and a half and is a more practical session for business owners and managers on managing cyber risk and responding to an incident.
The Cyber Escape Room is an hour long, laptop based challenge in which attendees take on the role of a cyber investigator, solving puzzles and uncovering clues against the clock.
The Insider Threat Case Study is a fifteen minute briefing, delivered in person or online, that walks through a real case from West Yorkshire showing the risks posed by insider threats.
Further free resources
Alongside the training, PC Davies pointed us to two further free resources worth knowing about. The North East Business Resilience Centre is a police led, not for profit organisation offering free membership and cyber security support to SMEs, including a partnership with the Cyber Essentials certification scheme. Police CyberAlarm is a free, Home Office funded tool provided by local police forces that monitors and reports suspicious cyber activity, helping businesses identify and mitigate risks before they become incidents.
